An asylum affidavit translation example can be useful when you need to understand what a certified English translation should look like before filing evidence with USCIS or submitting materials to an immigration attorney. The goal is not to improve, shorten, or reinterpret the witness’s statement. The goal is to provide a complete, accurate English version of the original document, supported by a proper translator certification.
For asylum applicants, affidavits may come from family members, neighbors, colleagues, religious leaders, medical professionals, or others who have direct knowledge of past harm or feared persecution. Because these documents can support a claim involving legal status and personal safety, translation errors, missing passages, and informal certifications can create unnecessary questions about the evidence.
What an asylum affidavit translation must include
A translation submitted with a foreign-language affidavit should reproduce all meaningful content in English. That includes the affidavit title, the writer’s name and address if shown, dates, signature lines, notary wording, stamps, seals, handwritten notes, and any attachments referenced in the document.
The translator should not change the affidavit’s tone or make the declaration sound more persuasive. If the original says the writer “heard” about an event, the translation should not state that the writer “witnessed” it. If a date is unclear, incomplete, or written in a local calendar format, the translation should reflect that fact rather than guess.
For USCIS filings, a foreign-language document generally needs a full English translation accompanied by a certification from the translator. The certification should state that the translation is complete and accurate and that the translator is competent to translate from the source language into English. Notarization is not normally required for the translation certification unless an attorney, court, consulate, or another receiving authority specifically requests it.
Asylum affidavit translation example
Below is a simplified fictional example. It illustrates format and certification, not the facts or legal strategy needed for an actual asylum case. A real affidavit may be much longer and may include country-specific names, addresses, official seals, or handwritten portions that also require translation.

CERTIFICATE OF TRANSLATION
I, [Translator’s Full Name], certify that I am competent to translate from Spanish into English and that the foregoing is a complete and accurate translation of the attached document titled “DECLARACIÓN JURADA DE MARÍA GARCÍA.”
Translator’s Signature: ____________________
Translator’s Name: [Translator’s Full Name]
Date: [Month Day, Year]
This certification belongs with the translation. It should identify the source and target languages and clearly connect the certification to the affidavit being translated. A professional provider may include its business information and a signed certification page, but the essential point is the translator’s attestation of competence and accuracy.
Details that should not be omitted
An affidavit can contain more than its numbered paragraphs. Omitting non-paragraph content is one of the most common avoidable problems in official translations. A complete translation should account for stamps, seals, notarial statements, headers, footers, identification numbers, handwritten corrections, and signature labels.
If a seal contains readable text, that text should be translated. If it is not readable, the translation can state “[illegible seal]” or “[seal]” as appropriate. The same principle applies to handwriting. A translator should never invent words from an unclear signature or stamp.
Formatting should remain as close to the original as practical. That does not mean every line must appear in the identical location. It means the translated document should allow an immigration officer, attorney, or reviewer to compare the English text with the source easily. Headings, paragraph numbers, dates, and signature blocks should remain clear.
Translation is not affidavit drafting
A translated affidavit and a newly drafted affidavit are different services. Translation converts an existing statement into English. Drafting helps a person prepare the statement itself, decide what facts to include, and arrange those facts for a legal matter. If the affidavit needs factual revisions, additions, or legal review, those changes should be handled before translation and with appropriate legal guidance.
This distinction matters because translators must remain faithful to the source. They can translate “I believe,” “I was told,” and “I saw” accurately, but they should not decide whether those statements are legally sufficient. Inconsistent dates, vague locations, or uncertain recollections should be addressed with an immigration attorney or accredited representative, not silently corrected in translation.
Common issues in asylum affidavit translations
Names deserve special attention. A witness’s name should normally be rendered exactly as it appears in the source document, including accents where applicable. If the affidavit refers to a person whose name is spelled differently elsewhere in the immigration record, do not alter the translation to force consistency. Instead, discuss the discrepancy with legal counsel and consider whether an explanatory statement is needed.
Dates can also require care. Many countries use day-month-year formatting, while US readers may expect month-day-year. A professional translation can spell out the month, such as “14 March 2022” or “March 14, 2022,” to avoid confusion. If the source uses a non-Gregorian calendar, the translator should accurately identify the original date format and avoid making unsupported conversions.
Another issue is regional language. A phrase, honorific, political term, or local agency name may not have a perfect English equivalent. The best translation preserves the meaning in plain English and may retain the original term in parentheses when it is necessary for clarity. Literal wording is not always accurate wording, but a translation must never go beyond what the source supports.
Choosing a translation provider for immigration evidence
For a sensitive filing, use a human translator with experience handling official immigration documents. Machine translation may miss context, handwriting, legal terminology, and country-specific wording. It also cannot provide a reliable signed certification based on a professional review of the complete source document.
Before ordering, provide a clear scan of every page, including blank pages with stamps or writing on them. Tell the provider the source language, the destination language, the filing deadline, and whether the affidavit has notarizations, exhibits, or handwritten notes. If you need the translation for an attorney review, ask for an editable or clearly paginated version that can be matched to the original.
AL Waseem Translation provides human-certified translations for immigration documents in more than 150 languages, with confidentiality and document readiness for official use. For an asylum affidavit, accuracy is not a cosmetic detail. It helps ensure that the witness’s actual words are presented clearly, completely, and without avoidable uncertainty.
Before submitting the affidavit, compare the source document, English translation, and certification page side by side. A careful final review gives the statement the best chance to speak for itself when it matters most.
